## What Backtest Is

Backtest is a strategy research tool for crypto, forex, gold, stocks, ETFs, futures, indexes, and other supported market symbols. Users can select a symbol, timeframe, test period, strategy mode, trade direction, stop loss, take profit, fees, slippage, and position size. The app returns metrics, chart evidence, trade details, equity curve, drawdown, saved history, and optional AI analysis.

## What Backtest Is Not

Backtest is not a brokerage, exchange, financial adviser, investment adviser, or real-money order execution platform. It does not place live trades and does not connect to brokerage execution accounts. Backtests are historical simulations and do not guarantee future performance.

## Core Features

- Trading strategy backtesting on historical candles.
- Preset strategies such as MA Cross, Pullback, Breakout, RSI, Bollinger, MACD, Engulfing, Pin Bar, Inside Bar, Sweep, Trend+, Vol Break, Mean+, and MTF.
- Manual rule prompts for custom strategy descriptions.
- Long-only, short-only, and both-direction testing.
- Stop loss, take profit, commission, slippage, position size, and timeframe controls.
- Strategy confidence score based on sample size, profit factor, net profit, win rate, drawdown, and concentration risk.
- Trade detail charts with entry, exit, stop-loss, take-profit, and indicator overlays.
- AI analysis for authenticated users, including trade-cluster review and improvement suggestions.
- Paper signal bots that monitor simulated signals and can notify users without placing real trades.
- Local and account-linked saved history so users can rerun strategy setups.

## Methodology

Backtest publishes its calculation method at https://backtest.click/methodology/ and https://backtest.click/methodology.md. The methodology explains inputs, market data, chronological trade simulation, single-position behavior, fees, slippage, stop loss, take profit, confidence score, AI analysis, and limitations.

## Product Screenshots

Real app screenshots are available at https://backtest.click/screenshots/. They show strategy setup, BTC result charts, saved history, paper signal bots, and account quotas.

## Supported Markets

Backtest can test supported crypto pairs such as BTC/USDT and ETH/USDT, forex pairs, gold such as XAU/USD, and market symbols available through supported data providers. Availability depends on provider coverage, timeframe, and historical range limits.

## Safety And Risk

Trading financial assets is risky. Users can lose money in real markets. Backtest results are hypothetical and may be affected by data quality, candle granularity, fees, slippage, market gaps, and assumptions about intrabar execution. AI analysis can be wrong and should be treated as research support only.

## Evidence Workflow (v1.6)

Backtest supports an evidence-first research workflow. Users can preserve compatible saved runs, inspect trade-level path evidence, evaluate an unchanged candidate on a locked chronological holdout, and monitor fictional paper signals after provider-confirmed candle close. Comparable runs should share market, data, timeframe, period, rules, costs, sizing, and execution semantics. MFE and MAE describe favorable and adverse movement while a simulated trade is open; R-multiple uses the initial planned risk as a fixed denominator. Paper monitoring is observation-only and does not place orders.

- [How to Compare Backtest Runs Like for Like](https://backtest.click/learn/compare-backtest-runs/): Compare backtest runs fairly by locking market, data, rules, costs, sizing, and execution assumptions before judging changes.
- [Trade Evidence: MFE, MAE, R-Multiple, and Holding Time](https://backtest.click/learn/trade-evidence-mfe-mae-r-multiple/): Read MFE, MAE, R-multiple, holding time, fees, and exit context together to understand what happened inside each simulated trade.
- [Backtest Overfitting and Locked Holdout Validation](https://backtest.click/learn/backtest-overfitting-holdout-validation/): Reduce backtest overfitting with a trial log, chronological research window, gap, locked out-of-sample holdout, and predeclared pass rules.
- [From Backtest to Paper Monitoring on Closed Candles](https://backtest.click/learn/backtest-to-paper-monitoring/): Move a frozen backtest into observation-only paper monitoring, act only on closed candles, and audit signal parity without real orders.
